
1. Almonds
Loved in both sweet and savoury dishes, almonds are high in calcium and packed full of protein. In fact, eating raw almonds can even lower bad cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, provide protection against cardiovascular disease and diabetes and boost energy. Buy them either whole, shelled, raw, blanched, sliced, slivered, dry-roasted or ground to add to your dishes. Almonds can be stored in the fridge or freezer for up to nine months.

2. Sweet potatoes
Not only are they sweet and buttery, sweet potatoes are also packed with folate and dietary fibre. Add to that plenty of Vitamin C and E, and being an excellent source of beta-carotene, and you have one super flavoursome and nutritious vegie. Plus there’s no need to parboil them. They’re quick to cook and the natural sugars make them a delicious addition to soups, braises and bakes.

3. Blueberries
Blueberries have long been hailed as one of nature's superfoods, and for good reason. Each tiny berry is packed with Vitamin C, dietary fibre and antioxidants to keep you in good shape. Choose firm, plump looking berries that show no sign of damage.

4. Spinach
Kale may be enjoying its moment in the sun, but don’t forget to include spinach in your trolley for a similar vitamin hit. Full of Vitamins A, C and K, as well as boasting fibre, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium and Vitamin E, this is one vegie no kitchen should be without. And with researchers identifying at least 13 different compounds in spinach that function as antioxidants and anti-cancer agents, there’s no doubting this vegie’s status as a true superfood.

5. Yoghurt
Not only is yoghurt packed with calcium, Vitamin B-2, Vitamin B-12, potassium and magnesium, it also contains the friendly bacteria that is essential for a healthy gut. Known as probiotics, these bacteria have been credited with everything from boosting the immune system to improving the effectiveness of the gut when it comes to processing food.

6. Broccoli
Another easy-to-find superfood, this vibrant green vegetable is ideal in a range of dishes from Asian-inspired stir-fries to Italian vegetable bakes. Packed with Vitamins A, C and K, as well as folate and sulforaphane, which helps the body detoxify, broccoli is also thought to help you ward off cancer. Look for tight, compact heads with a deep green colour.
