What kind of nibbles can be frozen?

There's a whole world of Christmas nibble recipes out there that can be easily added to the freezer until your need them. Sausage rolls, meatballs and sweet biscuits and balls all make perfect options. And for the ultimate get ahead, you can even bake your gingerbread men ahead of time, then defrost them at room temperature for 30 minutes before decorating. Too easy!

How long do they last?

As a general rule, aim to eat your nibbles within a month of making them. After this their flavour will begin to diminish and you run the risk of them absorbing other freezer smells. Also, remember, once defrosted never add your nibbles back to the freezer.

Savoury freezable nibbles

There's an endless variety of festive savoury nibbles you can add to the freezer, and we think these recipes are some of the very best:

Meatballs: Meatballs are one of the best additions to any well-stocked entertainer's freezer. Simply cool them completely then freeze them in a single layer on a tray. Once frozen, transport them to a snap-lock bag and use within 3 months.

Pinwheels and cheese straws: These pastry classics are wonderful options to keep in the freezer ready to bake. Simply make the recipe up to the point where it needs to be cooked, them pop the uncooked treats into the freezer on a tray. Once frozen, add them to airtight containers and use within a month.

Mini quiche: When it comes to freezing mini quiche it doesn't matter if you choose a classic or crustless recipe, or if you want to fill them with smoked salmon or plenty of cheese. When you're ready to eat them you can either defrost them in the fridge or reheat them from frozen in a slow oven for 25 minutes or until warmed through.

Add a few sweet treats to your freezer to grab as unexpected guests drop in. These handy tips and recipes can also significantly cut down on the work you need to do during December.

Chocolate balls: Make your sweets last longer by making a batch to pop into the freezer and enjoy throughout the season. Chocolate balls are the ideal recipe to keep close at hand, as they are one of the classic Christmas treats that takes only a few minutes to defrost once out of the freezer.

Christmas pudding balls: These festive looking bites are nothing more than fruit cake crumbs bound with a little orange juice and decorated with melted chocolate. Consider making the balls ahead of time and leaving the decorations until you've defrosted them.

Cupcakes and mini Christmas cakes: Un-iced cupcakes and Christmas cakes are some of the best additions to the freezer. These treats can be taken out of the freezer and finished with a swirl of buttercream, or a little fondant, whenever needed.

Biscuit dough: Keep rolls of biscuit dough on hand to whip up a batch of your favourite biscuits in a jiffy. Shortbread, spice biscuits and gingerbread all work wonderfully straight from the freezer, and ensure that you'll have fresh Christmas biscuits ready throughout the season.
