It’s been a couple of years since Arnott’s discontinued their much-loved Lattice Biscuits. We were devastated, and ever since then have been thinking of ways to replace the beloved bikkie. Our friends at Taste turned a SAO into a homemade Lattice Biscuit which sufficed… until now.
What can I use instead of Lattice Biscuits?
One of our Facebook community members mentioned they visited their local Asian supermarket and found a fantastic alternative. So, we finally had the chance to head over to our local Asian supermarket to see for ourselves.
Sure enough, we found a brand called Hup Seng biscuits sitting on the shelves. They have a remarkably similar texture and shape to Lattice Biscuits, and they fit perfectly in a slice dish! We picked up a packet and did a test at home.

On this Lattice alternative hunt, we also stumbled across Julie’s Sugar Crackers, which are available in supermarkets.
The verdict
Hup Seng
These Malaysian biscuits are sprinkled with sugar and hold their shape, but they have a very slight salty flavour (not as much as Julie’s Sugar Crackers). They do look a lot like Lattice Biscuits, so they may fool your guests! The texture is very similar to the Lattice Biscuits too.

Julie’s Sugar Crackers
These biscuits have a similar texture to the Lattice Biscuit, and they’re sprinkled with sugar crystals, too. The crackers hold their shape so you can make a slice but these bikkies are a bit more on the savoury side so if you’re a salty-sweet lover, you’ll love these for your Lattice slice.

Why are Lattice Biscuits discontinued?
A spokesperson for Arnott’s told us they often have to make difficult decisions with retail partners regarding which biscuits to produce at the Arnott’s bakeries and which ones to stock at supermarkets.
“There is a finite amount of shelf space available. Unfortunately, we’ve had to retire the production of Lattice Biscuits,” she said.
