Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 tbs honey
  • 3 tbs butter melted
  • 2 cup water
  • 3 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground aniseed anise seeds
  • 2 egg yolks lightly beaten

Method

  • Step 1
    In a bowl, combine the sugar, honey, butter and water, stir until well blended.
  • Step 2
    Sift together flour, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon and anise.
  • Step 3
    Add flour mixture gradually to butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  • Step 4
    Cover the dough and let stand overnight.
  • Step 5
    Roll dough out on a lightly floured board to 1 cm thick. Cut shapes with Christmas cookie cutters and outline them with beaten egg yolk.
  • Step 6
    Place the cookies on greased oven trays and bake in a preheated oven at 190C for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Step 7
    Decorate with small pieces of candied fruit, licorice or coloured sprinkles.
Recipe Notes

Keeps for about a week in an airtight container.
