There’s no better dessert than an apple crumble – the tender fruit, subtle cinnamon flavours and golden topping combine to make a comforting sweet treat.
But sometimes, you need a cold weather dessert fast – and that’s where this clever recipe comes in.
How did apple crumble come to exist?
This dessert has a few origin stories, but the overwhelmingly popular one attributes the apple crumble to wartime rations.
At a time when flour and butter were in short supply, this thrifty sweet treat became popular as it only uses a small amount of flour and fat compared to an apple pie.
15 minutes to this fast apple crumble
Fast forward to now, where we have plenty of flour and butter available, but a lot less time.
So a 15 minute apple crumble is just the thing for modern days – it packs all the flavour of a classic crumble but comes together with just five minutes of prep and 10 minutes in the oven.
That’s just enough time for the ice cream to get perfectly scoopable and ready to serve!
What’s the trick to a quick crumble?

This clever recipe uses a few tweaks to cut down cooking time by more than half.
Swapping the usual flour for toasted muesli means the baking time can be shortened but you still get that golden topping.
Plus, opting for canned apple slices means the fruit is already deliciously soft and just needs the oven time to heat up and get covered in crumbly goodness.
Lastly, using a shallow baking tray or sheet pan instead of a deep dish means that everything heats up and cooks faster.
What’s in a crumble?
In my opinion, the perfect crumble is a mix of textures, with homey spices and a golden hue. You want soft and knobbly bits plus crunchy bites.
The oats add a touch of crispness and heartiness to the topping. Extra additions like coconut or nuts are a fun touch – not essential but very welcomed.
This clever and quick version still gets that blend of textures by using both toasted muesli plus traditional oats, and of course a generous stir of melted butter to help everything get sunshine- gold and delicious.
How to make a 15 minute apple crumble

Set your timers, we’re about to start! Lightly grease a shallow baking tray or sheet pan. Drain the tinned apple slices and arrange in a single layer on the baking tray.
In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients: toasted muesli, rolled oats, shredded coconut, chopped walnuts, brown sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Mix in some melted butter then top the apples with this marvellous mixture.
It takes just 10 minutes of baking to turn the dish into a golden delight, so get the ice-cream or cream (or both!) and you’re ready to serve!
