Traditional Swedish Meatballs

My friend made me this dish last year in Sweden. These simple meatballs are served with a creamy sauce and is on the table in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1/2kg mince
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion minced
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice

Sauce

  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 3 tbs butter
  • 3 tbs flour
  • 1 tbs Dijon mustard
  • 1 splash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup cream

Method

  • Step 1
    Soak breadcrumbs in milk. Add the mince, egg, onion, nutmeg and allspice and mix, shaping into small meatballs.

    Cook in an oven for 180C until brown and cooked through.
  • Step 3
    Meanwhile to make the sauce, cook off the butter and flour on the stovetop. Slowly add the stock and cream, and whisk constantly until thickened.
  • Step 4
    Add mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Serve over cooked meatballs.
Recipe Notes

Serve this with creamy mash potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce.

You can use beef mince, pork mince or a mixture of both.
