This is a old recipe that my grandmother used to make and is loved by everyone.
Ingredients
- 6 x 400 g tin chopped tomatoes
- 3 large onions, diced
- 2 large green apples, peeled and grated
- 4 teaspoons salt
- 1 kg white sugar
- 1 x 375 mL bottle Ezy Sauce, shake bottle well
- 1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric
- 1 tablespoon mustard powder
- 3 tablespoons curry powder
- 5 tablespoons cornflour
Method
-
Step 1Combine tomatoes, onion, apple and salt in a large saucepan, stir and bring to a boil.
-
Step 2Add sugar and Ezy Sauce, stir and simmer for 1 hour.
-
Step 3Blend turmeric, mustard, curry powder and cornflour with ⅓ cup water to make a smooth paste, add more water if necessary.
-
Step 4Stir paste into relish mixture, simmer for 10 minutes. Bottle in sterilised jars.
-
Step 5Allow to stand for ½ hour before covering. Relish will thicken more as it cools.
Recipe Notes
If you like a mild relish add less curry powder, or add less Ezy Sauce. If you want it thicker add extra corn flour, adjust sugar amount if you want it more or less sweet. Everyone likes this recipe and doesn't want me to change it at all. Great in casseroles, in hamburger mix, on toast and with steak and other meats. Makes approximately 6-9 jars depending on size.
