This is my Mum's recipe. As kids we were so excited when she made these. Toffee apples are still a favourite of mine. - abrarose

  • Step 2
Stick wooden skewers into apples at stalk end about halfway through. Take care they go in straight.
  • Step 3
Rinse apples under cold running water and stand on wire rack to dry. Do not wipe apples dry, they must be completely dry before coating.
  • Step 4
Put sugar, white vinegar, water and liquid glucose into a large saucepan and stir over a low heat until sugar dissolves.
    Toffee Apples
  • Step 5
Bring to the boil and boil without stirring until it turns a pale honey colour. Toffee will make a cracking sound when ½ teaspoon is tested in cold water.
  • Step 6
Remove from heat and allow bubbles to subside.
  • Step 7
    Stir in the food colouring.
  • Step 8
Tilt saucepan to one side and swirl apples in toffee, taking care to coat completely.

  • Step 9
Remove apples from the toffee and twirl in a jug of cold water to set toffee. Place onto prepared tray.
