Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 jar of Nutella or equivalent
- 300ml of cream
- 1 dessert spoon sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- Dark chocolate (optional)
Method
-
Step 1Preheat the oven to 220C. Grease a tray, and grease cream horn moulds.
-
Step 2Defrost the puff pastry. Using a big, heavy knife carefully cup into 16 strips (i.e. around 2cm or so each). Gently wind the strips of puff pastry around moulds, starting at the tip, ensuring that they overlap. Each mould will use around two strips.
-
Step 3Brush the pastry with beaten egg, and place (with overlapping pieces of pastry down) on the greased tray. Repeat.
-
Step 4Bake for 220C for around 15 minutes until golden.
-
Step 5Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly then gently remove the pastry from the moulds. Practice makes perfect, and you can make more if some of them don’t quite come off intact (try greasing with more butter if they have difficulty sliding off).
-
Step 6Allow to rest until cool.
-
Step 7To make the filling, beat the cream until it is thick, then add the sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until firm enough to pipe. Place in a piping bag.
-
Step 8Spoon a generous teaspoon of Nutella into the bottom of each horn. Pipe cream on top.
-
Step 9To make chocolate shavings, use a kitchen peeler and gently scrape along one side of a block of dark chocolate. Dust onto the cream horns.
