Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 tbs salt
  • 2 tsp butter melted
  • 5 cup plain flour
  • 1 tbs dry yeast

Method

  • Step 1
    In a large mixing bowl, pour 2 cups of boiling water over oats and allow to stand for 2 hours.
  • Step 2
    Sprinkle yeast in ½ cup of lukewarm water. Let it stand for 10 minutes and add to oats with molasses and salt.
  • Step 3
    Stir in butter and flour until well blended.
  • Step 4
    Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for 1½ hours.
  • Step 5
    Punch the dough down and divide into 2.
  • Step 6
    Form 2 loaves and place each into a greased 23 x 13 cm loaf pan.
  • Step 7
    Allow to rise in a warm place for 40 minutes or until doubled in size.
  • Step 8
    Bake at 190c for 40-45 minutes.

Recipe Notes
When bread is done it will be brown and sound hollow when tapped. All of your friends will want this recipe. I used black strap molasses.
