Complete with beef and prawns, and full of flavour, this is one for the fried rice fans! Nasi goreng makes for a brilliant meal on its own, or you can serve it as part of a delicious Indonesian feast. - Australia's Best Recipes Team

Ingredients

  • 250g prawns
  • 90g butter
  • 500g beef fillet steak thinly sliced
  • 3 cabbage leaves sliced
  • 2 red capsicums sliced
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 4 spring onions roughly chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves crushed
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbs soy sauce
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1 cucumber peeled thinly sliced
  • 250g long-grain white rice cooked

Omelettes

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbs milk
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 knob butter

Method

  • Step 1
    Omelettes: Beat eggs lightly with milk, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Step 2
    Grease a frying pan with butter. When hot, pour in enough of the egg mixture to make one very thin omelette.
  • Step 3
    When cooked, roll and slice into thin strips.
  • Step 4
    Repeat with remaining egg mixture.
  • Step 5
    Rice: Shell prawns, then saute in 30g of butter and set aside.
  • Step 6
    Heat remaining butter in a large pan. Add onion and garlic, and saute for 1 minute or until onion is transparent.
    Nasi Goreng
  • Step 7
    Add meat, saute until tender and season with pepper and salt.
  • Step 8
    Add cabbage, capsicums, shallots and hot rice. Toss with a fork to mix well.
  • Step 9
    Add half the omelette strips, sauteed prawns, soy sauce and bean sprouts.
  • Step 10
    Heat thoroughly, stirring continually.
  • Step 11
    Add a little more butter if mixture appears too dry, and season to taste.
  • Step 12
    Serve on a hot platter, garnished with remaining omelette strips and sliced cucumber.

Recipe Notes

You can use steak, pork or chicken.

Rice is best cooked best the day before, and can be warmed up in microwave when needed. I recommend long-grain rice.

What is traditionally served with nasi goreng?

Nasi goreng is often served topped with a fried egg, with cucumber and tomato on the side – the vegies balance the fried rice with a little freshness and crispness. This recipe has swapped the fried eggs for omelette, but you can make fried eggs if you prefer.

What does nasi goreng mean?

In Indonesian and Malay languages, nasi goreng literally means 'fried rice'.
