How to make Nan's apple sauce: key tips
If you don't happen to have a food processor to blend the apple sauce, that’s okay. I prefer to stick a hand blender straight into the saucepan of the apple mixture and whizz until I get the texture I like. If you want a chunky sauce, simply don’t blend it a lot. Using a potato masher in the saucepan also works well for a chunkier apple sauce.
Key ingredients in Nan's apple sauce recipe
I think Granny Smith apples are the way to go for this sauce as they are the perfect balance between tart and sweet. However, you could also use pink lady or golden delicious, or even a combination of different types of apples, if you desire.
Ground all spice and cinnamon are used to amplify the aroma and flavour of this sauce. I like to add a few whole cloves to the mixture, too, as I simply adore the flavour they bring. If you do add them, just be sure to remove them before blending or you’ll have a nasty sour surprise in your beautiful sauce.
Fresh lemon juice provides a subtle tang. You can swap it for lime juice, if you have fresh limes at hand.
If you’ve enjoyed making this sauce, you might also like to make mint sauce or this easy quince jelly.
