Ingredients

  • 250 g unsalted butter chopped
  • 200 g dark chocolate chopped
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 cup self-raising flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 2 egg lightly beaten

Icing

  • 100 g dark chocolate chopped
  • 2 tbs thickened cream

Method

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 170C and lightly grease and line a 23 cm round cake tin or a 24 cm square tin.
  • Step 2
    Place butter and chocolate in a pan, stir over moderate heat until melted and combined.
  • Step 3
    Add sugar and hot water, stir until combined. Allow to cool.
  • Step 4
    Sift flours and cocoa into a bowl, add the cooled butter mixture and mix lightly.
  • Step 5
    Add eggs and combine thoroughly. Pour into prepared tin and bake until a skewer inserted into cake comes out clean. 1 hour and 25 minutes if using a round tin or 1 hour and 10 minutes for a square tin.
  • Step 6
    Stand for 5 minutes and turn onto rack to cool.
  • Step 7
    Icing: Put cream and chocolate into pan. Stir until chocolate is melted and mixed with cream. Cool slightly, then spread over cake.
  • Step 8
    Decorate with grated chocolate and serve with cream topped with chocolate shavings.
