It's a family favourite, and it's cooked with my family in mind to enjoy together as a family. It's also made with ingredients that most people will have in their pantry.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion large
  • 500 g pork mince
  • 1 kg beef mince
  • 1 tbs basil dried
  • 1 tbs dried rosemary
  • 1 tbs thyme dried
  • 1 tbs oregano
  • 2 garlic cloves crushed
  • 2 x 140 g tomato paste
  • 2 x 410 g Ardmona canned chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tsp beef stock (powder)
  • 1 cup red wine of your choice
  • 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cans water cold
  • 1 pinch salt *to taste

Method

  • Step 1
Finely dice the onion and fry in large saucepan in olive oil until clear and soft, but not brown.
  • Step 2
Next, add the 500g of pork mince and cook until it's separated and not lumpy. Use a fork to do this as this gets rid of any lumps.
  • Step 3
Once separated, add the 1kg of beef mince and repeat as with the pork mince.
  • Step 4
Add the herbs and cook meat until it is nicely browned.
  • Step 5
Add the garlic (I add this now, so it doesn't get burnt and go bitter), add the 2 tubs of tomato paste. Cook off to get rid of any floury taste.
  • Step 6
Add the two cans of tomatoes to the meat and approximately 2 cans of cold water.
  • Step 7
Add the 2 teaspoons of beef stock powder, salt to taste and 1 cup of red wine, then cook until it reduces down to a thicker sauce for about 1 hour.
Recipe Notes

This sauce can take 1 hour or more to cook, the longer it simmers on the stove the richer the flavour gets.
