Ingredients

  • 800 g beef chuck steak, cubed
  • 3 short-cut bacon rashers chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 carrots chopped
  • 2 cup button mushrooms sliced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/3 cup red wine
  • 420 g can condensed tomato soup
  • 1 sheet puff pastry defrosted

Method

  • Step 1
    Preheat the oven to 160C.
  • Step 2
    Grease a large pan and brown the beef in batches. Set beef aside.
  • Step 3
    Add bacon and onion to pan and fry until onion becomes soft.

    Add carrots and mushrooms and fry for about 2 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Return beef to pan with bay leaf, red wine and soup.
  • Step 6
    Bring to a simmer, cover with lid and place in the oven for 1 ½ hours.
  • Step 7
    Increase oven to 180C.
  • Step 8
    Place the pastry over the surface of the meat and tuck around the meat.
  • Step 9
    Glaze the top with milk.
  • Step 10
    Bake for approximately 30 minutes.
  • Step 11
    Serve with beans and mashed potato.

  • 1 frying pan
Recipe Notes

Not difficult to make but takes a while. I use beef stock in place of the red wine if no red wine available. Use chuck steak or gravy beef.
