When those mid-afternoon cravings hit, there is no better treat to chomp on than a traditional chocolate slice. With a moreish choc-coconut base and heavenly sweet choc icing top, this easy slice will be in demand from school-end to sundown.

How to make a chocolate slice: key tips

This slice is very easy to make: you simply mix all of the base ingredients together until well combined and then press the mixture into a slice pan. You can grease the slice pan and line it with baking paper first if you’re worried about it sticking. Use a straight-sided glass to press the mixture down and to smooth the surface so that it is nice and even.

After baking, let the slice base cool in the pan, then make your icing and spread it over the top of the base. At this point, I’d pop the slice into the fridge to help the icing set. To serve, use a sharp knife to cut your slice into squares in the pan.

Key ingredients in this chocolate slice recipe

Use desiccated coconut in the base – it’s essentially dehydrated and finely shredded coconut meat, and has a concentrated coconut flavour. And for the sugar, use caster sugar, as the fine grains will combine more easily.

You don’t need to go all out and use quality cocoa in a slice like this – any brand will do. Just be sure not to use drinking cocoa, as it has added sugar. You can use either icing sugar mixture or pure icing sugar for the icing.

Why stop at just one type of chocolate slice? This chewy chocolate slice and microwave chocolate slice should be on your to-make list as well.

Recipe Notes

Make a choc-mint slice!

Simply add a few peppermint drops to the chocolate icing to make a choc-mint icing and you’ll add cool minty freshness to your slice.

Why is my slice crumbly?

After mixing the ingredients for the base, give some of the mixture a squeeze. If it doesn’t stick together and falls apart, add a dash of warm water to help it combine well. Also, make sure you firmly press the base into the slice pan (using a glass helps) and be careful not to overcook your slice.
