This creamy French onion steak is deliciously warming, perfect for cooler nights when you want something filling and easy to prepare. Whack everything in the slow cooker and enjoy the tasty fruits of your labour a few hours later.
Ingredients
- 2 brown onions, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced
- 1kg beef rump steak
- 20g butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 40g sachet French onion soup mix
- 125ml Woolworths Thickened Cream
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 4 sprigs fresh thyme
Method

Step 1Place onions and garlic in the bowl of a slow cooker.

Step 2Cut rump steak into large pieces. Season well with salt and pepper.

Step 3Melt butter with oil in a large nonstick frypan over medium heat. Brown steak for 1-2 minutes each side, then transfer to a slow cooker.

Step 4Whisk together French onion soup mix with 375ml boiling water. Stir through cream and Worcestershire sauce, then pour over steak and onions. Add thyme.

Step 5Cook for 3-4 hours on high, until meat is tender.

Step 6Serve with potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables.

Recipe Notes
- Rump steak is the perfect cut of meat for this dish because it responds well to slow cooking, but doesn’t need as long as a cheaper cut such as round or chuck steak. You could use scotch fillet as well.
