This is the ultimate in comfort food. A regular dinner when I was growing up, it has since become a regular meal for my family and now my children are cooking it for their families. It's one of those recipes that is easy to make, everyone loves and made to be passed down to each generation.
Ingredients
- 1kg beef steak, rump or chuck, trimmed, large dice
- 2 tbs plain flour (set 1 tbs aside)
- 1 tsp salt and pepper
- 2 tbs oil
- 60g butter
- 3 onions halved thickly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 1/2 tbs red wine
- 2 cups Massel* Beef Style Liquid Stock
- 1 tsp Massel* Beef Stock Powder
- 1 tsp Vegemite
- 1 tbs tomato paste
- 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste.

Method

Step 1Preheat slow cooker set to sear mode.

Step 2Mix flour with salt and pepper. Dust steak lightly with the seasoned flour.

Step 3Heat oil in slow cooker and brown steaks well on each side. Remove and set aside.

Step 4Add butter to slow cooker, when melted add onions & garlic and cook until onions are transparent.

Step 5Add red wine let it cook off for about a minute.

Step 6Stir in extra flour and cook for 2 minutes.

Step 7Gradually add liquid stock, then add Vegemite, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce & beef stock powder.

Step 8Put meat back into slow cooker, cover lid with a tea towel or lid cover.

Step 9Cook on low setting for 5 hours or until tender.

Step 10Taste add more salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 11Serve with mashed potatoes and your favourite sides.
