Ingredients

  • 4 cups plain flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 200 g cheese grated
  • 1/2 onion finely chopped medium
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g butter melted
  • 1 1/2 cups milk

Method

  • Step 1
    Sift the dry ingredients.
  • Step 2
    Beat the egg in a measuring jug.
  • Step 3
    Add the melted butter, and then the milk to make up to 2 cups of liquid.
  • Step 4
    Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, mix lightly, adding more milk if the mixture is crumbly.
  • Step 5
    Mix in cheese and onion.
  • Step 6
    Spread dough onto a floured baking tray and cut using a wet knife. Do not separate the scones.
  • Step 7
    Sprinkle with extra cheese.
  • Step 8
    Bake at 250C for 15-20 minutes.
  • Step 9
    Tip out onto a clean cloth, cover to cool.

Recipe Notes

The cheese and onion can be omitted or replaced with dates or sultanas.
