Easy and tasty. These stay nice and soft for two days.
Ingredients
- 4 cups plain flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 4 tsp cream of tartar
- 200 g cheese grated
- 1/2 onion finely chopped medium
- 1 egg
- 100 g butter melted
- 1 1/2 cups milk
Method

Step 1Sift the dry ingredients.

Step 2Beat the egg in a measuring jug.

Step 3Add the melted butter, and then the milk to make up to 2 cups of liquid.

Step 4Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, mix lightly, adding more milk if the mixture is crumbly.

Step 5Mix in cheese and onion.

Step 6Spread dough onto a floured baking tray and cut using a wet knife. Do not separate the scones.

Step 7Sprinkle with extra cheese.

Step 8Bake at 250C for 15-20 minutes.

Step 9Tip out onto a clean cloth, cover to cool.

Recipe Notes
The cheese and onion can be omitted or replaced with dates or sultanas.
