Why eat mac’n’cheese on it’s own when you can fill a crusty roll with it and double down on the carbs? These macaroni and cheese subs are oozing with creamy, cheesy, carby goodness. - Greer Worsley

Ingredients

  • 250g macaroni
  • 50g butter
  • 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup grated tasty cheese
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 6 crusty long buns

Method

  • Step 1
Cook macaroni according to packet instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • Step 2
In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Pour in milk and whisk until smooth. Gently heat until bubbling and thickened, stirring regularly so it doesn’t catch on the bottom. Remove from heat and season liberally with salt and black pepper. Stir through garlic powder and cheeses. Add cooked macaroni and stir to combine.
  • Step 3
Preheat oven to 200C (fan-forced). Cut each hot dog bun partway through down the centre top and place on an oven proof tray. Fill each bun with plenty of macaroni and cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden.
Recipe Notes

Best eaten hot.
