A healthier take on an American classic.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup hemp seeds ground
- 150 ml hemp milk warmed
- 225 g tofu
- 1 cup black-eye fresh beans cooked
- 1/2 onion finely chopped
- 1 celery stalk finely chopped
- 1 tbs hemp flour
- 2 garlic cloves crushed
- 1 tsp parsley finely chopped
- 1 tbs nutritional yeast flakes
- 1 tsp hempso sauce
- 1 tbs tomato paste
- 1 splash olive oil
Method

Step 1Place hemp seeds in a small frying pan over a medium heat. Lightly toast hemp seeds, stirring frequently to ensure they don’t burn. Grind the hemp seeds with a mortar and pestle and then soak in the heated milk for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2Mash tofu with the beans, onion, celery, garlic, parsley, yeast flakes, hempso sauce and tomato paste.

Step 3Shape mixture into burger or sausage shapes. Dip the burgers in the hemp flour and set aside on a plate.

Step 4Heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over a medium-high heat. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden and cooked through.

Step 5Place in a large cabbage leaf or sheet of nori, then in a freshly made hemp roll and cover with thin layer of hemp cheese and hemp ketchup to taste.

Step 6Serve with a large salad of lettuce and cucumber.
Recipe Notes
You can use any beans to create the burger patty.
The author suggests to try aduki, black-eye or chick peas.
You can replace Hempso oil for tamari or soy sauce. Can also replace hemp milk for soya milk.
