Packed full of dates, enough to make any mouth water! I make these every weekend from a foolproof recipe passed on from Grandma.
Ingredients
- 2 cups self-raising flour
- 3 tbs milk powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tbs caster sugar
- 3/4 cup dates chopped
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 4 tbs oil
Method
-
Step 1Preheat oven to highest setting, approximately 250C.
-
Step 2Sift flour, powdered milk, sugar and salt into mixing bowl.
-
Step 3Add dates and combine.
-
Step 4Once mixed, make a well in the centre of the bowl, add oil and slowly add water.
-
Step 5Mix slowly and gradually add more water so a soft dough is formed.
-
Step 6Turn dough onto a well-floured board and knead lightly until, when turned, the dough has a smooth top.
-
Step 7Flatten to approximately 2 cm high. Cut scones using a 5cm scone cutter.
-
Step 8Place into preheated oven and reduce heat to 200-220C.
-
Step 9Cook for 10-12 minutes until lightly brown on the top.
Recipe Notes
When adding the water to mix the dough, a wet mix is better than dry.
Best served with butter and eaten straight from the oven.
