Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 3 tbs milk powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tbs caster sugar
  • 3/4 cup dates chopped
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 4 tbs oil

Method

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to highest setting, approximately 250C.
  • Step 2
    Sift flour, powdered milk, sugar and salt into mixing bowl.

    Add dates and combine.
  • Step 4
    Once mixed, make a well in the centre of the bowl, add oil and slowly add water.
  • Step 5
    Mix slowly and gradually add more water so a soft dough is formed.
  • Step 6
    Turn dough onto a well-floured board and knead lightly until, when turned, the dough has a smooth top.
  • Step 7
    Flatten to approximately 2 cm high. Cut scones using a 5cm scone cutter.
  • Step 8
    Place into preheated oven and reduce heat to 200-220C.
  • Step 9
    Cook for 10-12 minutes until lightly brown on the top.
Recipe Notes

When adding the water to mix the dough, a wet mix is better than dry.

Best served with butter and eaten straight from the oven.
