Save your money and make your own. A little bit of work is required, but they taste wonderful.
Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 tsp dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup caster sugar
- 1 tsp oil
- 2/3 cup sultanas optional
- 1 cup lukewarm water
Bun glaze
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
Icing
- 1 cup icing sugar
- 2 tbs soft butter
- 1 tbs water warmed
- 1 tsp strawberry essence optional
- 1 cup coconut *to decorate
Method

Step 1Bun dough: Combine first four ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Step 2Add water and oil to dry mix and process until mixture is a slightly sticky dough that comes away from the bowl.

Step 3Knead or mix in a mixer for 5-10 minutes. Dough should be elastic, soft and well combined.

Step 4Add sultanas at the end and work through dough in order to prevent breakage.

Step 5Place in a bowl in a warm place covered with cling wrap and allow to double in size.

Step 6Once dough has doubled, place onto a floured surface and knock back.

Step 7Section the dough into 8-10 equal portions and roll into sausage shapes placing on a large tray with approximately 1-2cm in-between each.

Step 8Place in warm area covered with tea towel and allow to rise again.

Step 9Portions should slightly touch after have rising.

Step 10Cook at 190C for 15-20 minutes checking regularly for colour.

Step 11Bun glaze: Place sugar and water in pan on moderate heat.

Step 12Stir until dissolved and boil for 1-2 minutes.

Step 13Spread on buns with pastry brush when out of the oven and slightly cool.

Step 14This is optional but gives the buns a nice gleam.

Step 15Icing: Combine all ingredients into mixing bowl and mix until smooth, adding enough water to make a thick frosting.

Step 16Ice buns when cool and roll in desired topping.
Recipe Notes
It is important to use a good quality flour such as bread, or bakers flour as this gives the light bread texture. When adding water to dough add in increments. All flour is different and you may need more or less water than indicated.
Sultanas optional, and if including increase yeast to 3 teaspoons.
Sprinkles can also be used to decorate instead of coconut.
