Everyone’s favourite dessert ingredient, sweetened condensed milk, makes a star appearance in this quick, four-ingredient, chocolate fudge slice that will be devoured before you can even think about storing leftovers.

How to make a condensed milk biscuit slice: key tips

When blitzing your biscuits for the base, aim for a fine crumb so that when mixed with the butter and condensed milk it will form a solid base for your slice. To press the crumb in an even layer over the base of your slice pan, use the bottom of a flat-sided glass – you’ll find this much easier than using your fingers.

If you’re melting the chocolate layer using the stovetop, place your chocolate and remaining condensed milk in a small bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, but don’t let the base of the bowl touch the water, as this can cause the chocolate to melt unevenly and possibly seize. Stir constantly and you’ll be rewarded with a silky smooth mixture.

Key ingredients in this condensed milk biscuit slice recipe

You’ll need sweet plain biscuits for the base, such as Marie, Nice or Milk Arrowroot.

Sweetened condensed milk in the base as well as the top chocolate layer gives this slice a creamy, caramel-like flavour. It also ensures the topping doesn’t become rock hard, so that you can still bite into it.

The cook has used dark chocolate melts in this recipe, but you can use milk chocolate, if you prefer. You can also use any type of cooking chocolate, including block chocolate. Just be sure to break up any block chocolate so that it melts more quickly and evenly.

Recipe Notes

Why is my condensed milk biscuit slice breaking up as I cut it?

Did you refrigerate it for the full hour or longer? It takes a little time for the chocolate and butter in the topping and base to set, so try not to be tempted to cut your slice into squares too early. As the topping and base chill, they will set and harden, becoming the perfect consistency for chopping into those yummy squares.

Can I add anything else to this condensed milk biscuit slice?

For a snowy finish, sprinkle the top of your slice with desiccated coconut before you place it in the fridge to set. You could also dust the top with cocoa. To change up the topping, add some chopped nuts, such as peanuts, almonds or pecans, to the chocolate and condensed milk mix before spreading over the base.
