I make this when I have too many chokos. Great to have with cold meats in sandwiches. This was given to me by an old friend. - maryann manchee

Ingredients

  • 5 chokoes medium
  • 2 onion
  • 250 g dates
  • 1 cup dried apricots
  • 200 g dried apple
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup sultanas
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3 cup malt vinegar

Method

  • Step 1
    Wash, peel and remove seed from chokos.
  • Step 2
    Finely chop chokos, onion, dates, apricots, and apples.

    Place in a large saucepan with raisins and sultanas.
  • Step 4
    Add sugar, pepper and vinegar.
  • Step 5
    Stir over medium heat until sugar has dissolved and bring to boil.
  • Step 6
    Reduce heat and simmer uncovered, about 60 minutes or until thick.
  • Step 7
    Stir occasionally and remove from heat.
  • Step 8
    Stand mixture 5 minutes before spooning into warm sterilised jars and seal.

  • 1 saucepan
  • 2 glass jar with lid
Recipe Notes

Chutney will store for 2-3 months but should be put into the refrigerator once opened. Also good to sell at fetes or street stores.
