Relive the golden days when Gran served her warming baked apple and nutmeg custard for dessert. This winter dish uses simple and humble ingredients such as eggs, milk, canned apples, maple syrup, nutmeg and a touch of caster sugar. It's a nourishing way to enjoy creamy custard and a delicious way to remember the recipes of yesteryear. - Lindy Lawler

Ingredients

  • 500ml milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 40ml maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 400g canned apples
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (optional)

Method

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 150 degrees C. Gently whisk milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Don't whisk it too vigorously and avoid creating too many bubbles. Set aside.
  • Step 2
Lay the apples on the bottom of a casserole dish. Pour the custard mixture through a sieve over the apples. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake in a water bath for 50 minutes. Serve warm or, if you prefer it cold, chill in the fridge overnight.
