Pinwheels would have to be one of the easiest and yummiest savoury snacks to make. What’s more you can make them your own using your own combination of favourite flavours. Enjoy them as any-time-of-day snacks, picnic treats and party fare.

How to make pinwheels: key tips

When preparing your bacon, onion and tomato for pinwheels, be sure to chop them quite finely so that they will cook through quickly and any large pieces won’t stick out.

When puff pastry thaws, it gets really sticky and hard to work with, so my advice is to not fully defrost it and add your toppings. By the time your toppings are added, the pastry will be soft enough to roll up.

Cut each log into 6 even pieces, so that you have 18 pinwheels. Bake the pinwheels for 10-15 minutes or until puffed and golden.

Key ingredients in this pinwheels recipe

Puff pastry makes the pinwheels light and flaky. The filling for these ones is a savoury mix of bacon, onion and tomato, cheese and herbs on a layer of pizza sauce. You can change up the herbs to suit, and use as much or as little cheese as you like.

If you like these pinwheels, you’ll like these 11 school lunch box pinwheels, too! I also like to munch on ham and pineapple pinwheels.

Recipe Notes

What else can I put inside pinwheels?

Pinwheels are so versatile. Here are five popular fillings.

  1. Vegemite and grated cheddar
  2. Nutella
  3. Chopped ham, grated cheese, chopped green shallots and cream cheese
  4. Pesto and grated parmesan
  5. Jam of your choice and/or grated cheese

Can I make pinwheels ahead of time?

You certainly can. Wrap your uncooked filled pastry logs in plastic wrap, then in foil, and freeze until required for up to 2 months. Thaw slightly before slicing into pinwheels and cooking as per the recipe.
