Cuba libre
It may have a fancy name but this cocktail couldn't be simpler. Just add two parts dark rum to a glass that is half full of ice, add a squeeze of lime juice then top up with cola and garnish with a couple of slices of lime.
Mojito
Another Cuban favourite, the mojito is a refreshing summer drink that's easy to make at home. For a single serving, place 12 mint leaves, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 tablespoon lime juice in a tall glass. Crush together with a pestle or the end of a rolling pin. Half fill the glass with ice, add two parts white rum and top up with soda water. Garnish with extra mint and slices of lime and serve.
Lime daiquirí
Oh-so-sophisticated, this is the drink to serve before any seafood feast. Choose either fresh lemon or lime juice, or use whatever other fresh fruit juice that you like. Mix equal parts rum and freshly squeezed lime juice together with ½ teaspoon sugar in a cocktail shaker. Shake well, strain into a cocktail glass and serve.
Planter's punch
Loved throughout the Caribbean, this is the perfect punch for a Christmas get-together. To make, mix 1 (750 mL) bottle dark rum with 4 cups orange juice, 4 cups pineapple juice, 1 cup lime juice and 2 tablespoons grenadine in a large punch bowl. Garnish with orange and lime slices and serve in cups filled with crushed ice.
Minty watermelon mai tai
Easy to make, this is the ideal drink to make if you're unsure about your cocktail skills. Place 500 g peeled and chopped watermelon, ½ cup pineapple juice, a handful of torn mint leaves, ½ cup white rum, ¼ cup triple sec and 1 teaspoon grenadine in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses half filled with crushed ice, garnish with extra mint and serve.
