Woolies turns cult bakery item into their newest hot cross bun flavour

The Woolies Chocolate Mudcake is undoubtedly the most iconic thing in the bakery aisle.

For decades, this decadent cake has been a staple at any Aussie celebration and for a good reason: that moist cake topped with rich chocolate icing is so simple yet so so delicious.

This mudcake is so popular that the supermarket has started creating new sweet treats inspired by the Mudcake’s rich chocolate flavour.

Last year, Woolies launched Mudcake Ice-Cream, which featured a rich chocolate ice-cream base with a chocolate fudge ripple and REAL chunks of Woolies Mudcake throughout the ice-cream.

Now Woolies is giving their hot cross buns the major mud cake treatment.

Mudcake Hot Cross Buns are officially on shelves at Woolies

We’re calling it now, these are going to be THE hot cross buns of 2026. (Yes, it’s only January, but still!)

Mudcake Hot Cross Buns are exactly as you would imagine: chocolate hot cross buns filled with a gooey chocolate filling.

Sounds delightful!

We haven’t tried them yet, but food content creator, Nectorious Papi, described the filling as tasting exactly “like the top of chocolate mudcake at Woolies.”

That’s enough to get us down to Woolies ASAP.
