There’s nothing more satisfying than tucking into a deliciously ripe mango once the weather heats up.

But let’s face it, mangoes are messy. In fact, the juicier the mango, the better it tastes! 

Separating mango from the skin can be tricky. 

Often it means mango ending up on your hands, cutting board or still stuck to the mango skin. 

That’s why we can’t get enough of any hack that means less waste (and mess) when it comes to getting our mango ready to eat.

Enter, the mango glass hack: it’s a wildly easy trick to get your mango peeled and ready to eat in seconds! 

What is the mango glass hack?

The mango glass hack is as simple as it sounds and involves using a glass to peel the outer skin away from the inside flesh. 

To start, cut your mango into thirds, then get your glass ready. It’s best to use a glass with a wide rim and some people like to use a red wine glass, so it can cover as much of the mango as possible. 

Hold your mango third against the rim of the glass and push down gently, allowing the skin to come away from the mango flesh.

Your mango will drop into the glass, ready to eat — it couldn’t be easier. 

The best bit? There’s hardly any mess or waste involved. 

Other ways to peel and cut up mangoes

Peel it 

You can peel a mango the same way you would peel a potato or apple. Just make sure your peeler or knife is sharp enough to cut through a mango’s thick flesh. This works best on mangoes that are on the firmer side and not too ripe. 

Next, cut your mango up as you wish — just bare in mind it will be slippery. 

While the most straightforward method, I find this the messiest way to get your mango ready to eat. You can also end up with quite a bit of mango stuck to the skin or chopping board. 

The hedgehog way

This is as Aussie as Vegemite on toast and absolutely blew my Brazilian husband’s mind the first time I showed him!

Cut your mango into thirds and then cut a criss-cross pattern into each of the mango cheeks.

Then simply invert your mango cheeks and dig in, or if you’re sharing you can use a knife to separate the mango squares from the skin.

The hedgehog method is my favourite way to eat a mango. There’s just something so satisfying about seeing those little mango squares pop up!

The TikTok way

OK, so this method has been around for ages, but it recently went viral on social media so we had to try it out. 

It’s simple: cut your mango in half around the seed, then twist to release each half from the stone. 

Taste.com.au’s Senior Content and Social Media Producer Marina Karris put it to the test with a Kensington Pride mango.

“It worked, much to my surprise, but I found that the flesh was too soft and the twisting action almost damaged the precious fruit,” she said.

“This technique might be a better success with the firmer Calypso or R2E2 varieties. 

“Keep in mind, many of the users successfully cutting mangoes this way are using varieties that aren’t grown in Australia.”
