When the cooler months hit, there’s nothing better than biting into a crisp apple.
Apples are an absolute staple in my grocery shop. I love snacking on them, and I love making an apple-based dessert. Nothing can come between me and a good apple crumble during winter.
But this winter, there’s a new apple on the block, and let’s just say it’s pretty out-of-this-world for an apple.
Say hello to the Cosmic Crisp Apple
In 1990, Dr. Bruce Barritt, a horticulturist at Washington State University, set out to invent the perfect apple – an apple that would surpass all other apples in taste and texture.
Through a process of cross-pollination, he and his team combined the best of both worlds from an Enterprise apple (best known for its bold red colour and ease of growing) and a Honeycrisp apple (best known for its crunch and juiciness) to create the Cosmic Crisp.
Two decades of research and eating a lot of apples resulted in an apple with a vibrant red colour, crisp texture, and great flavour.
The rise of the Cosmic Crisp
The Cosmic Crisp Apple made its way down under last year and sold out in only 5 WEEKS.
Who knew an apple could be so popular! In fact, the Cosmic Crisp is so popular that it was “dubbed ‘the Beyoncé of Apples’ in the US – thanks to its fierce crunch, flawless versatility, and ability to steal the spotlight in any setting,” said a spokesperson for Cosmic Crisp.
What actually is a Cosmic Crisp apple?
The Cosmic Crisp is a cross between the Enterprise and Honeycrisp apple. These are both American varieties of apples but are similar to our Pink Lady and Royal Gala in colour, taste and texture.
One of its biggest selling points is that its crisp white flesh apparently goes brown at an incredibly slow pace compared to other apples, so it has become a staple in lunch boxes, on grazing boards and is great for on-the-go snacking.
Well, as a lover of Beyoncé AND apples, I’ll be the judge of that…
Cosmic Crisp: what do they taste like?
When it comes to apples, I’m not really picky – a good apple is a good apple and a bad apple is a bad apple.
So before trying the Cosmic Crisp, I expected to eat a good apple, but nothing mind-blowing.
Oh boy, was I WRONG.
I genuinely believe this is the BEST apple I’ve ever had. The Cosmic Crisp has a super crisp texture that’s perfectly sweet with a little tartness.
There’s no better way to describe it, but the flavour is super apple-y – it’s like eating an apple-flavoured lolly, only full of nutrients (so I think these apples would go down a treat in the school lunch box)!

When can I buy Cosmic Crisp apples in Australia?
This season’s harvest of Cosmic Crisp apples is available from July in Woolies in NSW, VIC, QLD and WA.
We’re expecting them to sell out again, so make sure you head down to your local Woolies ASAP to try this out-of-this-world apple.
