Great for the kids, movie night, a cheese platter, or to accompany a beer, these no-cook nuts and bolts are super easy to make and super munchworthy!
How to make nuts and bolts: key tips
This is a simple combine-the-cereal-and-nuts in a bowl, combine-the-coating-ingredients in another bowl, and then mix-it-all-together kinda recipe. That’s it! Nothing more to it! My only tip would be to follow the recipe. Don’t try and get ahead and throw everything in together and stir. You really need the coating ingredients well combined before you mix them into the nuts and cereal, so that the flavours are evenly distributed.
Cool the nut mixture completely before serving so that they will be at their crunchy best.
Key ingredient in this nuts and bolts recipe
Salted mixed nuts are the best for this recipe, as they offer the variety without buying individual packets, which can be expensive. However, there is nothing to stop you from choosing packets of your preferred nuts and mixing 300g of them together. I love salted nuts, but if you need to cut down on your salt intake, you can opt for unsalted and just let the soup mix and spices do the heavy lifting.
The “bolts” in this recipe is the Nutri-Grain cereal. In Australia, this is pretty much the only cereal we use – in America, Cheerios seem to be the go. You could experiment with cereal types if you like, such as Crispix or Chex, but I find it’s hard to mess with a classic.
Soup mix adds the seasoning to this recipe and, along with the salt in the nuts and the spices, gives the “nuts and bolts” that delicious not-so-mannerly lick-the-fingers quality we all love. A cream of chicken soup mix is used here, but French onion soup mix is another popular choice.
