Recipe Notes
Suggestions for herbs and spices are; garlic, parmesan, rosemary and olive, green onion, curry, Italian herbs.
Just remember the ratio of 1 tablespoon butter per 1 slice bread.
You can make 2 or 3 slices at once, however try not to exceed more than 2 layers of bread cubes in the dish. Best to experiment with 1 slice first to get the feel of it.
It is even easier to pre-butter both sides of the bread before cutting into cubes.
Fresh garlic can be added to butter before melting and bits discarded when croutons are cooked.
Croutons freeze very well, also last forever in an open jar on a counter top - mind you, not forever, they are very snacky!
It all depends on your microwave, mine usually take about 3 one minute bursts, others take up to 5 minutes. They start off soggy but end up really very crispy and can burn quickly if not watched carefully.
