Deep fried onion rings that you can make both ways and either spicy or regular. My family and friends love it and always request for it in gatherings. Adjustable based on how much individuals you want to feed. I never buy frozen onion rings anymore.
Ingredients
- 1 onion sliced
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
- 1 tbs plain flour
- 1 tbs cornflour
- 1 dried mixed herbs
- 500 ml oil
Method
-
Step 1In a bowl, beat eggs and add seasonings, mix well and set aside.
-
Step 2In another bowl mix the flours, spices or dried herbs and crushed cornflakes and set aside.
-
Step 3Use a fork to dip onions first into seasoned eggs, then into flour mix and then back into eggs and lastly into breadcrumbs, Panko or crushed cornflakes. Lay them on a lined baling tray lined with baking paper.
-
Step 4Before onion is all prepared, heat oil in an electric deep fryer or in a deep pan until hot. Test a bread cube and it should start to fry immediately.
-
Step 5Slide onion rings one by one into hot oil. Do not overcrowd as they will stick to each other and dramatically reduce the temperature of the oil.
-
Step 6Allow to fry until slightly golden in colour.
-
Step 7Drain on kitchen paper and serve immediately.
Equipment
- 1 deep fryer
Recipe Notes
Red, white, yellow or brown onions may be used.
For every one cup flour, I add about 3 tablespoons cornflour. If you don’t have cornflour don’t worry, they work just as well without it.
It is very versatile and you can try different spices every time and see the best combination that fits your family's taste buds.
For breadcrumbs you can use Italian, regular, Panko or crushed cornflakes. Use dried herbs if you are using regular breadcrumbs as the Italian already comes with dried herbs.
You can use spices, to taste e.g. chilli powder, Madras curry powder, paprika, coriander powder.
