Ingredients

  • 600 g cooked beef day-old diced
  • 2 tbs butter
  • 3 onion chopped
  • 1 tbs plain flour
  • 3/4 cups beef stock (liquid)
  • 2 cup mashed potato
  • 4 tbs butter melted
  • 2 tbs fresh breadcrumbs

Method

  • Step 1
Cook onions in 2 tablespoons of butter in frying pan until coloured nicely. Sprinkle flour over and moisten with splashes of stock. Cook for about 15 minutes.
  • Step 2
Cool before mixing the beef in.
  • Step 3
Grease a gratin dish and pour mixture in bottom and cover with potato and then cover potato with breadcrumbs.
  • Step 4
Add tiny pieces of butter all over, or pour over melted butter to moisten.
  • Step 5
Place in hot oven for 15 minutes or until browned to your liking.
Recipe Notes

If I think the beef is a little dry, I add 3/4 cup of tomato soup concentrate or tomato passata in the base of the baking dish. Add herbs if you choose, but go lightly. Use leftover boiled or braised beef.
