A lovely crunchy topped apple cake, perfect for lunch boxes, afternoon teas or desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup plain flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 125 g butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 5 green apple
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Topping
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon *to taste
- 2 tbs dates finely chopped
- 2 tbs walnuts finely chopped
Method

Step 1Preheat oven to 200C (190C fan forced).

Step 2Peel and core apples, cut each into thick slices and set aside in water and lemon juice, to prevent browning.

Step 3Butter and lightly flour, or spray, a slice tray.

Step 4Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Step 5Melt butter, stir in the milk and egg, combine well.

Step 6Add to flour mixture and combine.

Step 7Spread batter into tray.

Step 8Press rows of apples into batter.

Step 9Mix topping and sprinkle over top.

Step 10Bake for 25 minutes.
Recipe Notes
Can be served with custard, cream or ice-cream or simply on it's own.
