Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 125 g butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 5 green apple
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Topping

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon *to taste
  • 2 tbs dates finely chopped
  • 2 tbs walnuts finely chopped

Method

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 200C (190C fan forced).
  • Step 2
    Peel and core apples, cut each into thick slices and set aside in water and lemon juice, to prevent browning.
  • Step 3
    Butter and lightly flour, or spray, a slice tray.
  • Step 4
    Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Step 5
    Melt butter, stir in the milk and egg, combine well.
  • Step 6
    Add to flour mixture and combine.
  • Step 7
    Spread batter into tray.
  • Step 8
    Press rows of apples into batter.
  • Step 9
    Mix topping and sprinkle over top.
  • Step 10
    Bake for 25 minutes.
Recipe Notes
Can be served with custard, cream or ice-cream or simply on it's own.
